To celebrate Hari Malaysia, Cuci Malaysia in collaboration with Kuala Langat Fishermen Association, and Kampung Kelanang Resident’s Association, organized a clean-up at Kampung Kelanang Jetty in Kuala Langat to create awareness of the struggle faced by fishermen due to climate change and waste management issues. A total of 64.5kg of waste was collected 29.3kg of which were recyclables.
This event also highlighted the importance of a healthy mangrove ecosystem in nurturing healthy marine lives that lead to abundance of seafood catch. Some fishermen reported on the increasing amount of waste flowing into the Malacca Straits from Langat River. “Anytime we have high tide, we can start seeing trash starting to flow into the sea. These floating trash and debris can cause damage to our boat and equipment. This can add up when you include the rising fuel cost” said Pak Shukur, Head of Kampung Kelanang Jetty.
Working together with university students and corporate partners, Cuci Malaysia has organized recurring clean-ups along Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka beaches. “Towards the end of preserving the cleanliness of Malaysian coastlines and rivers, more effort will be put into establishing a base-camp that is agreeable with all stakeholders so our long term effort can grow sustainably” said Chandra, President of Cuci Malaysia.
