Air Terjun Sungai Gabai is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Selangor, famous for its impressive 12-tier cascade. For generations, it has been a favorite weekend spot for families in the Klang Valley, with its signature 336-step staircase leading visitors to the upper pools. Located within the Sungai Lalang Forest Reserve, the falls are deeply connected to the identity of the nearby Kampung Sungai Lui and local Orang Asli communities. It is a place where many Malaysians have their first memories of playing in a forest stream, making it a significant piece of Selangor’s natural heritage.

Since the devastating floods and landslides of 2021, the site has remained officially closed to the public. The infrastructure that once made the falls accessible—including the famous concrete steps and several bridges—was left in ruins. Nature has started to reclaim the area, but not in a healthy way; fallen trees and landslide debris have choked the river, while the lack of maintenance has allowed old plastic waste and litter to become buried under the mud.

Restoring Sungai Gabai is about bringing a piece of local history back to life. The priority is to clear the landslide debris and tackle the layers of trash that have accumulated during the closure. This rebuild and restore effort includes repairing the staircase and safety railings so families can return safely,
